Go-Jek is both a taxi, a courier, and a shopping and grocery collection service, marketed as being suitable for both business and leisure use. Users of Go-Jek begin by calling the switchboard and specifying whether they are requesting transport for a person, package, or shopping collection. A fare is agreed upon depending on the distance involved, and a driver is sent out from the nearest available location. The caller will then receive a text confirming their order, and the driver is assisted from the Go-Jek call center en-route to avoid any unexpected difficulties. The driver will then arrive to pick up the delivery or person, or drop off the shopping, and is paid upon completion of the task. All of the Go-Jek drivers travel with an extra helmet in an effort to ensure the safety of passengers on taxi jobs, and they are all recruited through a referral system to ensure their reliability. Currently focused in the South and Central areas of Jakarta, Go-Jek have plans to expand throughout the city.

Minibus service offers an alternative mode of public transport - Springwise

cab4one are trying to cut down on the environmental impact of taxicabs by reducing their size, Spanish-based company Skybus have flipped this idea on its head, with an upsized taxi fleet of mini-buses. However, by incorporating into their operations a ride-share element akin to go520 and Ridekicks, they claim to have created a mode of transport both greener and more convenient than existing taxi and public transport models.

Using Skybus is a little like using a combined taxi and bus service. Bookings are made online in advance of travel, specifying the pick up and destination addresses, as well as the number of passengers. Skybus then gives the user a collection time and the location of the nearest Skybus stop.

      Crisis opens era of restraint

      From The International Herald Tribune:

      Crisis opens era of restraint
BY KEN BELSON AND NORIMITSU ONISHI

TOKYO — Even in a country whose people are known for walking in lock step, a national consensus on the proper code of behavior in post-tsunami Japan has emerged with startling speed. Consider it the age of voluntary self-restraint, or jishuku, the antipode of the Japan of the ‘‘bubble’’ era that celebrated excess.

With hundreds of thousands of people displaced up north from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis, anything with the barest hint of luxury invites condemnation. There were only general calls for conservation after the March 11 quake, but within days Japanese of all stripes began turning off lights, elevators, heaters and even toilet seat warmers.

But the new mood goes beyond the need to compensate for shortages of electricity brought on by the closing of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

At a time of collective mourning, jishuku also demands that self-restraint be practiced elsewhere. Candidates in the local elections next month are hewing to the ethos by literally campaigning quietly for votes, instead of circling neighborhoods in their usual campaign trucks with blaring loudspeakers.

With aggressive sales tactics suddenly rendered unseemly, the giant Bic Camera electric appliance outlet in central Tokyo has dropped the decibels on its incessant in-store jingle, usually audible half a block away. At the high school baseball tournament in Osaka, bands put away their instruments; instead, cheering sections have been clapping by hitting plastic horns together.

McDonalds offered 100 randomly awarded $5 or $10 gift cards by checking-in at one of its restaurants on Foursquare Day, 16 April.  The results were clear: 33 percent more foot traffic on the day of the campaign, and 600,000 people opted to follow and fan the brand on various social media sites.

The campaign cost a paltry $1,000.
